Our comrade Mary Gundel of the #putinaticket movement was recently on the show to let us know that the movement was organizing a protest at the Dollar General Shareholder’s Meeting.

Turnout for the protest was solid, with busloads of protesters and Dollar General employees coming from across the country to fight for better working conditions, fair pay, and the right to organize.

Comrade Gundel was a Dollar General manager in Florida who was fired following a viral TikTok video she created exposed the horrendous working conditions she, and thousands of other Dollar General employees endured. As a result, Mary went on to lead national demonstrations on May 2nd. We were lucky enough to interview her on May 1st, so if you’re unfamiliar with the Dollar General strike, please check our coverage of the ongoing struggle.

Kenya Slaughter also attended the protest. Kenya is a Dollar General employee who did a New York Times op-ed in April 2020. The op-ed painted a grim picture of what essential workers were facing during the COVID-19 pandemic (you can view our COVID stats here to keep up-to-date on case counts and community spread) and led to PPE changes, and hazard pay corporation-wide.\

Shareholding employees and activists were locked out of the Shareholder’s Meeting, including Dr. Reverend William Barber II of the Poor People’s Campaign, video below:

Here’s some live footage Mary broadcast from the event:
